The Arignar Anna Government Hospital of Indian Medicine (AAGHIM) Chennai, Since its establishment in 1970 at Arumbakkam, Chennai, the Arignar Anna Government Hospital of Indian Medicine (AAGHIM).
Has grown from a 110-bed facility to a dynamic 310-bedded hospital, offering in-patient services for Siddha, Varma, Ayurveda and Unani systems of medicine, AAGHIM is unique as the only AYUSH Hospital in India providing treatment facility for all five AYUSH systems. Patients have the facility to choose their preferred system of medicine for treatment. AAGHIM also have in-house Laboratory for basic blood testing and X-ray unit to serve the public widely. AAGHIM also runs Nine Siddha, Four Homoeopathy, One Ayurveda and Eleven Yoga and Naturopathy dispensaries with General Hospitals and Medical College Hospitals, and also standalone dispensaries.
The patients taking IP treatments are provided with Diet (IOD) as per the G.O(D). No.914 dated:04.08.2009 of Health and Family Welfare Department. AAGHIM propose to provide a more holistic diet in line with the dietary principles of AYUSH systems, in the future to enhance the benefits of the treatments given.
Siddha:
Beyond the routine General Out-Patient services, AAGHIM conducts Special OPs for each day focusing on Skin disorders, Diabetes Mellitus, Bronchial Asthma, AIDS, Cancer, Hypertension, Spinal Disorders, Infertility. AAGHIM also providing freshly prepared Nilavembu Kudineer and Kabasura Kudineer every day for the benefit of public and out-patients.
In the In-patient ward we admit chronic hemiplegia patients and various kind of arthritis, spondylosis and women related diseases. For the above conditions we are offering internal medicines and also external therapies like Thokkanam, Nasiyam, Thaarai, Podi Thimirthal, Puravalayam, Vethu, Pattru, Suttigai, Kara sikkitchai, Ottradam, Attai vidal, Pugai and Kombu kattal.
Varma:
The Varma, department functions with a sanctioned bed strength of 35, and also provides Out-Patient treatment facilities, specializing in the treatment of neurological diseases and chronic pains, Varma Department plays a crucial role in the holistic healthcare approach of AAGHIM.
Tele Medicine:
Tele Medicine consultation also has been recently initiated for the benefit the Public who can consult specialists from remote areas also.
Ayurveda:
The Ayurveda department provides Out-Patient services with a 55-bedded In-Patient facility. Among its service the notable is treating major chronic diseases, including Panchakarma and Kriyakarma, Abhyangam (Oil massage treatment) is offered at the Out-Patient level. ForIn-Patients, an array of treatments such as Oleation Therapy, Udwarthanam (Powder Massage), Sirodhara (Pouring Oil on the head), Vamanam (Emesis Therapy), Virechanam (Purgation Therapy), and others are administered.
Unani:
The Unani department, attends to an average of 300 to 400 cases daily in the Out-Patient ward. With a 100 beded In-Patient ward functioning in collaboration with the Government Unani Medical College, Special Therapies, and Regimental Therapies like Dalak (Massage), Hamam (Bathing), Hijama (Cupping), Fasad (Venisection), Bukhoor (Nebulization), and Irsalalak (Leech therapy) are provided.
Yoga and Naturopathy:
Government Yoga and Naturopathy Medical College and Hospital is having out-patients department and in-patients department facilities with 100 beds. We provide various therapies like yoga therapy, Hydro therapy, Mud therapy, Helio therapy, Diet therapy, Herbal therapy, Aromatherapy, Acupuncture, Acupressure, Reflexology, Electro therapy, Chromo therapy and Magneto therapy to public at free of cost for the prevention and management of various disease like obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease, stroke, gynecological problems, hypothyroidism, migraine, cancer, sinusitis, anxiety, depression, musculoskeletal disease like arthritis, spondylosis, disc proplapse, frozen shoulder, common neck pain, bronchial asthma, renal calculi, renal failure, cholelithiasis, acid peptic disease, gastritis and peptic ulcer, inflammatory bowel diseases etc.
Homoeopathy:
The Homoeopathy wing functions with a OP strength 120-150 per day. The chronic disease like Psoriasis, Eczema, Bronchial asthma are treated with good result. Al so renal and gallbladder calculi and gynaecological diseases like PCOS and fibroid uterus are treated without surgical intervention. The system has popularity in the public especially children due toits palatable and easily accepted form viz. sugar globules and chewable tablets.
Pharmacy:
AAGHIM has an attached Pharmacy within the campus manufacturing Siddha, Ayurveda, and Unani medicines catering to the needs of both Out-Patient and In-Patient Departments, including 10 wings attached to the hospital. In AAGHIM Pharmacy has provided freshly prepared medicines for the benefit of public to administer who are coming to OP and admitted In-patient ward. For ensuring Quality Control, an in-house laboratory with departments of Chemistry, Pharmacognosy and Microbiology are conducting rigorous qualitative and quantitative analyses of drugs and prepared medicines.
The Pharmacy is budget allotment in the year of 2023 is Rs.1,92,19,440/- to purchase raw drugs for the preparation of Siddha, Ayurveda and Unani medicines. The value of medicines prepared in the year of 2023 is Rs.3,19, 52,411/-.

AYUSH Paramedical Courses:
Tamil Nadu is first and only state in India for conducting AYUSH Paramedical Courses viz., Diploma in Integrated Pharmacy (D.I.P.) and Diploma in Nursing Therapy (D.N.T.) by the Commissionerate under self— supporting scheme at Government School of AYUSH Paramedical Courses at Western Block Arignar Anna Government Hospital of Indian Systems of Medicine Annex Campus, Chennai and Government Siddha Medical College campus, Palayamkottai and these courses were approved by All India Survey of Higher Education.

Tamil Nadu State Medicinal Plants Board (TNSMPB):
Tamil Nadu State Medicinal Plants Board was formed and registered on 26.10.2009 (Registration.No.286/2009)
The board is governed by the General body with 11 Members and an Executive Committee of Seven members both under the Chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary to Government, Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Tamil Nadu. The Commissioner of Indian Medicine & Homoeopathy Dept. is the Member Secretary/CEO for TNSMPB.
On behalf of the Tamil Nadu State Medicinal Plant Board, District and State Level awareness meetings, seminars and exhibitions are being conducted annually with the financial support of the National Medicinal Plants Board (Nucleus Fund) for the farmers and herbal industry stakeholders to convey the importance of medicinal plants.
Tamil Nadu State Medicinal Plants Board also helps Government & Private schools to get funds for a continuous period of 5 years to School Establish Herbal Garden in Tamil Nadu, through National Medicinal Plants Board, to create awareness among School Children regarding Medicinal Plants.
The main objective of this board is to submit the project proposals of the Government, Private and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s) registered as Members of this board and get the grant from the Central Government, National Medicinal Plants Board.
One day Regional level “Awareness Campaign on Cultivation of Medicinal Plants and Germplasm maintenance of Red Listed Plants”, on 18th cember2023 at Tiruvannamalai District.
Two-days District-level training program on “Identification, conservation, sustainable harvesting, and value-added on selected medicinal plants for the sustainable rural livelihood” of Dindigul District, Tamil Nadu, on October 19th and 20th, 2023.
