Institutional / Office Overview:-
The research and development wing for ISM, chennai has been established in 2013. The amount of RS.12.00 crores was sanctioned including building towards the establishment of research and development wing for ISM under the then C.M’s announcement under rule 110.

The construction of the building to this wing completed in all aspects and handed over by PWD in 06/2017 and the current supply has been provided by the authorities only during November to December 2017.
The Research and Development Wing for ISM, Chennai has been established exclusively for facilitating the faculties and students of Indian system of Medicine such as Siddha, Ayurveda, Unani, Homoeopathy and Yoga & Naturopathy. At present, this wing has four major Laboratories namely Analytical Chemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology & Toxicology and Animal House with advanced equipments.
The Government have issued G.O.Ms.No.246, health and family welfare department, dated 26.06.2018 permitted to purchase equipment and infrastructure on need basis, subject to the condition that no additional provision shall be made towards purchase of equipments.
Accordingly equipment at the cost of Rs.3.5/- crores has been procured through Tampcol in consultation with the expert team and installed during march 2020. Now, analytical chemistry, Microbiology and pharmacology and toxicology laboratories are fully equipped and functional and testing of samples are carried out.
The Government have sanctioned the following posts to Research and Development Wing for ISM, Chennai in G.O.Ms.No.303 Health and Family Welfare IMI-(2) Department dated: 20.12.2013 and in G.O.Ms.No.49, Health and Family Welfare IMI-(2) Department dated: 12.01.201
Objectives
The To set up ISM
- Herbal extraction and isolation.
- Microbiology analysis.
- Preclinical studies – Toxicity studies, Pharmacological studies and Pathology studies.
- Clinical study centre.
- Library, Herbarium, Training. Room and Conference hall facilities.
However, under the supervision of deputy director and Research Officer , the equipment installed in the laboratories are utilized for research studies by deputing the available staff from the state drug testing laboratory and Government siddha medical college, chennai and also from siddha central research institute, chennai.
The legislative assembly, the hon’ble minister for medical and family welfare has made the announcement as follows:
“The quality of drugs manufactured by the private Indian system of medicine firms will be tested in the government research and development laboratory functioning under Indian medicine and homoeopathy department at low cost”
Hence, action has also been taken to obtain a license for carrying out tests for identity, purity, quality and strength of ASU drugs or the raw materials used in the ASU drugs from the authorities concerned.
Research and Development Wing for ISM, Chennai:
The Research and Development Wing for ISM, Chennai has been established exclusively for facilitating research activities of the faculties and students of Indian system of Medicine such as Siddha, Ayurveda, Unani, Homoeopathy and Yoga & Naturopathy. At present, this wing has four major Laboratories namely Analytical Chemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology & Toxicology and Animal House with advanced equipments. Various research activities like clinical and observational studies have been carried out by this wing in collaboration with Central Council of Research in Siddha and ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai.
This wing actively participated in setting up a War Room in Covid -19 pandemic situation to interact with the public and also by setting up a Siddhar Kayakarpam Unit – Siddha Post covid care centre. Induction Workshops named NAATRANGAAL and SWIMER for Under Graduate and Post Graduate students are being conducted by this wing. Continuing Medical Education Programs are also being conducted by this wing in collaboration with Central Council for Research in Siddha to encourage the students for under taking research. This wing has clinical research steering committee and Institutional Ethical Committee to support the research activities.
Other Activities:
- Government Siddha Medical College and Hospital Palayamkottai with bed strength of 350 beds is conducting Special Clinic for Diabetics, Hypertension, Urolithiasis and infertility.
- Government Siddha Medical College, Chennai, with bed strength of 85 beds is providing unique Siddha treatment like Thokkanam, Varmam, Patru, Otradam etc.
- Government Ayurveda Medical College Hospital, Kottar, Nagercoil with bed strength of 100 beds is providing special treatment for paralysis, skin diseases, arthritis through steam bath, Oil massage and pancha karma therapy.
- The Hospital attached to Government Yoga & Naturopathy Medical College, Chennai is running with 100 bed capacity and it specializes in giving treatment for weight reduction by means of natural foods, natural herbal treatment, fasting, mud bath therapy, Steam bath therapy, plantain leaf bath. They have an exclusive diet of uncooked food for the IP within the Government allocated budget of per patient.
- The Government of Tamil Nadu has established the International Institute of Yoga and Naturopathy Medical Sciences in Chengalpattu at a cost of Rs.96.00 Crores. Hon’ble Chief Minister inaugurated the college on 14.4.2022 with annual intake of 100 students for BNYS Course and 30 students for MD course have been admitted in the college. At present three batches of UG students (300) and three batch of PG (45) students are studying in this Institute. The starting of payment ward for treating inpatients is under process.
