Government Siddha Medical College, is one of the fine institutions in Tamil Nadu providing enriched education in Indian medicine. Our college is affiliated with Tamil Nadu Dr M.G.R Medical University and recognized by Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM), New Delhi.

Institutional overview:

  • The Government Siddha Medical College and hospital Palayamkottai was established on November 30, 1964, as the third institution under the five-year plan, was initiated independently due to the absence of a government Siddha Medical College. As a result, in 1936, the Thaayi Sey Medical Institute, affiliated with Nellai Medical College, became associated with Siddha Medical College. In this context, the Siddha Medical College began functioning actively with the admission of 30 students for the academic year. This marked the inception of the first college dedicated to Siddha medicine in India.
  • In the academic year 1972-73, two departments, namely General Medicine and Preventive Medicine, were introduced. A new campus was established with land and two buildings, expanding the Siddha Medical College. On January 21, 1975, it became fully functional.
  • The admission of 30 students for the academic year marked the commencement of this college, and by the academic year 1984-85, it had evolved into a college with an intake of 100 students annually. Currently it had with an intake of 100 UG students and 60 PG students annually.
  • The institution is dedicated to conducting the BSMS (Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery ) program, Comprehensive five and a half years medical degree course in.
  • The college operates as a government-owned institution in Tamil Nadu and is affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai. The admission process for the BSMS program involves the Selection Committee, Directorate of Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy, Government of Tamil Nadu, ensuring a merit-based selection of students.

Academics:

Under graduate programme (BSMS):

The Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery offered by the Government Siddha Medical College and Hospital Palayamkottai is comprehensive 5 and half year undergraduate, Degree program. It consists of 4 and Half years of rigorous full-time academic study followed by a mandatory one-year rotatory residential internship program. The medium of instruction is English, and the course is affiliated with Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Guindy. With an annual intake capacity of 100 students, the eligibility criteria require candidates to have passed the 12th examination with Science subjects, securing a minimum of 50% in Biology and 50% aggregate marks in Physics and Chemistry. Additionally, candidates must be at least 17 years old as of 31st December of the current year to be eligible for entrance into this program. The BSMS course aims to provide students with a holistic understanding of Siddha Science, incorporating both theoretical knowledge and practical clinical training in reputed hospitals in Chennai during the internship period.

Post Graduate programme:

The Postgraduate Department at the Government Siddha Medical College, Palayamkottai is committed to developing specialists with exceptional competence and skills in the field. The competency-based curriculum is meticulously designed, featuring well-defined competencies for each year of study, along with a specified quota of academic events and procedures. Selection is made on The basis of their rank in the All India Ayush PG Entrance Examination [AIAPGET] Conducted by Ministry of Ayush and Counseling held in this Institute. Reservations are applicable as per the rules of Government of India.

Our Outpatient caters to the diverse needs of our patients through both UG & PG block OP, welcoming an average daily inflow of 600-700 patients. In Our OP Block we offer a special treatment such as Siddha Yoga Maruthuvam, Varma Maruthuvam, Pura Maruthuvam (Attai vidal, Ottradam,Pattru, Vethu Steam Bath). Holistic consultations are provided by our Siddha doctors, emphasizing a comprehensive approach to diagnostic and curative care.

Inpatient Department (IPD):

Our Inpatient Department operates 24/7, including Sundays and holidays, with a total bed occupancy of 350 beds (UG block: 191 beds & PG block: 159 beds). To ensure accommodation availability, we recommend prior booking for both new and follow-up patients. Qualified physicians oversee daily medical treatments, providing care in a serene and tranquil atmosphere. Patients are required to bring their medical reports and ongoing medications for admission.
