About

Siddha Geriatric Health Care in the management of musculoskeletal disorders provides health care services in the systems of traditional medicine such as Siddha, Ayurveda, Unani, Yoga & Naturopathy and Homoeopathy. They also run institutions which teach the above systems.

Background:

Geriatrics is the branch of medicine that deals with the diseases of old age. The health care of the aged people involves treating acute illnesses as well as managing the rehabilitative and long-term care of the aged. It is currently estimated that adults over 60 years constitute eight per cent of India’s population. According to the census 2011, the state of Tamil Nadu ranks second with the highest number of aged people in India. The proportion of aged people in the state was (10.5%) whereas that of national level was 8%. The common health issues related to ageing are joint pain, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis followed by cardiovascular, neurological, and uro-genital diseases. Siddha Geriatric Health care for the management of Musculo skeletal disorders (SIGMA) is to provide care especially in musculoskeletal disorders with a main aim of improving their quality of life and to prevent progressive debilitating conditions.

Objective:

Primary objective:

To evaluate the effectiveness of Siddha medicine intervention and Siddha Varmam therapy among the rural population with musculoskeletal pain visiting Siddha Primary Health Centres in Tamil Nadu, India.

Secondary Objective:

To improve the quality of life – physical, mental and social and emotional well being.
To document any adverse effects if any.

Study population:

Patients visiting Siddha Out patient department at the Primary Health Centres

Study period:

24 weeks (6 months).
