Background and rationale Introduction:

Prediabetes is currently a major public health issue globally. They have an increased risk of progression to diabetes and elevated risks of cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and death. Several studies showed that long term end organ damage due to diabetes may start in prediabetic state.

Identifying the individuals with prediabetes , creating awareness on preventing the progression to diabetes either by lifestyle modification or intervening with cost-effective strategy to prevent or delay the progression to diabetes is the need of the hour as this pose huge economic and health burden to our society.

The preclinical and clinical studies documented the safety and efficacy of Madhumega
chooranam and Avarai Kudineer (AVK) – polyherbal siddha formulations.

Objectives:

Primary objective:

To determine the effectiveness of MMC and Avarai Kudineer in preventing progression of pre-diabetes [Impaired Fasting Glucose (IFG) or Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT) or both IFG&IGT] to type 2 diabetes during 1year follow-up

Secondary objectives:

-to document the adverse effects if any present
-to determine scalability, acceptability
-to determine the drug compliance
-to evaluate the cost effectiveness in the diabetes prevention (Estimate the cost spent for preventing the progression of diabetes/estimated cost for implementing the intervention for prediabetes)

Study centers:

Identified prediabetics in 50 blocks connected to the District Head Quarters Siddha Hospital in Tamil Nadu (The identified prediabetics will be recruited in primary care setting)
Study period:

12 months
